NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) publishes multiple types of materials for guidance and information. (They also have "official publications.")

One type of document that they publish for public view and comments are IRs, or Internal/Interagency Reports. Given that those are not always returned when you are searching for a specific topic, it is helpful to search only for those types of documents alone.
