CPE

Common Platform Enumeration (CPE)

Common Platform Enumeration, or CPE, is a structured naming scheme for information technology systems, software, and packages. Based upon the generic syntax for Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI), CPE includes a formal name format, a method for checking names against a system, and a description format for binding text and tests to a name.

Originally created and advanced by MITRE, all intellectual property associated with CPE was transferred to the U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST).

NIST holds the operational responsiblity for CPE, while MITRE continues to support NIST in an advisory role for the ongoing operation as needed.
